Book Review: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Overview

Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty is a compelling thriller set in the seemingly tranquil seaside town of Pirriwee, that masterfully blends elements of mystery, drama, and dark humor.

The story revolves mainly around three women whose lives become intricately entwined through their children’s school and a mysterious death at a school trivia night. The book delves into themes of female friendship, domestic violence, human psychology, and the facades people maintain.

 Initial Impressions

So my son has started his school this year. Thus the premise of friendship between school moms and their rivalry seemed intriguing. Especially when that involves a Murder it spiced up the interest! And the book doesn’t disappoint. From the first chapter, “Big Little Lies” grips the reader with its interesting premise and engaging narrative style. The best part is how the author deviated from the usual path of whodunits, with the readers wondering ‘who was murdered”, along with who is the culprit.

Plot and Structure

The plot is cleverly constructed and oscillates between present-day police interviews and flashbacks, gradually revealing the events leading up to the fateful trivia night all the while not revealing the victim till the climax.

Characters

The multidimensional, relatable characters are the heart of “Big Little Lies.”
Each character have their own unique flavors. They are all fighting their own devil but mostly they have their heart at the right place.

My favourite is hands down, the layered character of the fiery and fiercely loyal Madeline. Her confident exterior over her insecurity as a mother is a force to reckon with.

My second favourite amongst in the potpourri of characters is the five year old Ziggy. His empathy and resilience is something you cannot ignore.

The author has masterfully drawn each and every character. Even a seemingly insignificant character of a babysitter, Gwen with her presence in a few lines, would make a deep impact.

Jane was another vulnerable single mother, youngest in the group. She will make you think of the consequence of that one decision that can change your life forever. Or how words are sometimes more vile than a vile act.

However in my opinion the most complex character is Celeste or someone I could not gauge completely. She is a loving wife, loving mother, leading a lavish life with a secret. Without giving any spoiler I can just add it is rightly said, “it can happen to anyone” – and she is the testament.

The characters are grey, and the realistic portrayal is what keeps the reader going.

Writing Style

Moriarty’s writing style is engaging and fluid, with a sharp eye for detail and a knack for capturing the complexities of human relationships. Giving each character a distinct voice she keeps the reader entertained while being believable in her approach.

 Themes and Messages

The book tackles a number of complex themes like domestic violence, complexities in co parenting of divorced parents, sexual trauma, the pressure to keep up social façade, and bullying. But, above all it celebrates women friendship.

The portrayal of friendship among women is particularly resonant, highlighting the power of solidarity and support in overcoming personal challenges. Madeline, Jane, and Celeste’s bond is a testament to the strength and support that true friends provide.

My absolute favourite quote would be the one that sums up this book best in my opinion –
“ It occurred to her that there were so many levels of evil in the world. Small evils like her own malicious words. Like not inviting a child to a party. Bigger evils like walking out on your wife and newborn baby or sleeping with your child’s nanny. And then there was the sort of evil of which Madeline had no experience: cruelty in hotel rooms and violence in suburban homes and little girls being sold like merchandise, shattering innocent hearts.”

Conclusion

Overall this page Turner have successfully brought me out of the reading slump. In conclusion, I can say “Big Little Lies” is a must-read for anyone who enjoys a well-crafted story with rich characters and a gripping plot. I highly recommend it and would rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
